How to Deal with Losing in Sports

First, let’s all agree losing sucks, but it happens.  Literally half of the teams lose each game (with the exception of the few sports that allow ties.)  But the important thing is how you deal with it after the loss.

Take each loss as a learning experience and don’t just focus on the negative aspects and DON’T waste your energy feeling sad about it. I’m not saying don’t get upset about losing; I’m just saying don’t spend a lot of time letting it drag you down It sucks but let’s turn it into a chance to learnUse your energy to think about how you can improve.

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. What went wrong?

  1. What went well?

What went wrong?

Once you have a couple things in mind, ask yourself what you can do to improve on each of theseNow you know what to work on at your next practice.  Maybe you’re a lineman who is getting beat on the outside or your timing is off on your serve.    Don’t be afraid to ask your teammates or coaches for help

What went right?

I want you to review these last so you always finish by focusing on the positives.  No matter how big or small, always remember what you did right.

I recommend keeping a journal.  It will be a great way to remind yourself of your strengthsAnd it’s a great way to track your progress at the end of the season
